Palawan April 2010
Day 1 Arrival in Manila. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 2 Manila to Puerto Princesa, Palawan. We will take an early flight to Puerto Princesa City, the capital of the island of Palawan. The island of Palawan, features bird life that is different to the rest of the Philippines. The avifauna here is more similar to that of Mainland Asia. The lowland forests here is superb and features several Palawan endemics as well. Upon arrival, we will proceed to Sabang Beach, the gateway to Puerto Princesa Subterrannean River National Park (more popularly known as St. Pauls National Park). We will have lunch on the way, and do roadside birding on the way to Sabang. Our target species here will include, White-vented Shama, Blue Paradise Flycatcher, Palawan Tit, Fiery (Small) Minivets, Lovely Sunbird, Blue-naped Parrots, Blue-headed Racquettail and the Palawan Hornbill. In the evenings, we will look for Palawan night birds such as Palawan Scops-Owl and Javan (Palawan) Frogmouth. Overnight in Sabang.
Day 3 - Underground River and surroundings. We will depart early morning by boat to the St. Pauls National Park, home of the world famous Underground River. This protected area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered to be the longest navigable river tunnel in the world. We should find most of the islands endemics in the area. Our main target is the Palawan Peacock Pheasant, a beautiful ground bird that can only be seen in the isalnd of Palawan. Some individuals will require work, like the skulking Falcated Ground-Babbler, and the shy Palawan Blue Flycatcher.
Day 4 - Sabang and Pandan Island. We will have a final morning in Sabang to look out for species that we may have missed. Lunch enroute. In the afternoon, we will go to Pandan Island to look out Mantanani Scops Owl and other species as well. Overnight at Puerto Princesa.
Day 5 Balsahan and Rasa Island. We will have an early morning departure for Balsahan. This is were the Iwahig Prison is and it features superb lowland forest. This site is excellent for two endemic species, the Melodious Tree Babbler and Palawan Flycatcher that is not present in Underground River. Before midday, we will drive to Narra, a town south of the Palawan capital, Puerto Princesa which is the take-off point for Rasa Island. Late in the afternoon we will visit Rasa Island. This island is the last stronghold of the critically endangered Philippine Cockatoo. Return to Narra and night at La Vista.
Day 6 Narra - Puerto Prinsesa - Manila. We will have a last morning birding in areas around Narra. We will stop for some species along the way if needed. Later, we will drive back to Puerto Princesa and catch a late afternoon flight to Manila.
Day 7 End Tour. We will drive you to the airport for your return flight to Thailand.
TOUR COST: US$ 945.00 per person for a group of 10 persons.

Scientific name: Megapodius cumingi
Habitat: Coastal scrub to montane forest
Birdwatch note: Locally common but secretive. Heavy bodied, ground-dwellingand fast runner. Eggs from several females are laid deep in a mound of rotting vegetation or loose sand.
